共轨式喷油系统主要的贡献就是将喷射压力的产生和喷射过程彼此完全分开,通过对共轨管内的油压实现控制,使高压油管压力大小与发动机的转速基本无关。这一柴油发动机技术的限度地降低了柴油发动机车型的振动和噪声,A-V-L GK同时将油耗进一步降低,使排放更加清洁。但共轨技术的喷油压力低于泵喷嘴系统,一般只能达到160MPa左右。由于喷油压力调节宽泛,采用共轨技术的柴油车能地适应各种工况,起步也不会困难。
共轨高压泵总是保持在压力,导致燃油的浪费和的燃油温度。共轨系统为商用车设计的,喷射压力为140MPa,乘用车喷射压力为135MPa。
